Well, first of all Brevin Knight isn't a free agent, so you couldn't
offer him anything. But he is the backup PG on a team who has cap
space and who's starting shooting guard and small forward are free
agents. I'll wager that Charlotte wants to re-sign both Gerald
Wallace and Matt Carroll, but they're also rumored to be pursuing some
of the other big-name free agents. What if the Lakers were to offer
them a low-priced shooting guard or small forward (or power forward
for that matter) or two. They'd get decent (but not great) players to
cover two positions for their backup PG. We could even throw in a
second round pick to sweeten the deal. (there I go proposing trades
again)

Possible, but I don't see much the Lakers have to offer at those
positions. I personally like Mo Evans for what he is, but he doesn't
really have a skillset that makes him valuable.

Nor do I see Charlotte really eager to dump Brevin (maybe not at that
salary... I'm assuming they picked up his option, as I seem to recall
him having one...) Remember, last season they signed Derek Anderson and
picked up Jeff McInnis because they were so depleted in the backcourt.

With Grant Hill, I wouldn't try bringing him in to be a starter. I'd
either offer less than the full mid-level for a multi-year deal, or
would offer the full mid-level with a team option on the second year.
I'd be expecting him to play about 15 minutes of backup a game - kinda
the role that Mourning has filled on Miami. Of course, the Pistons
are rumored to be clearing cap space right now so they can offer him
more than the midlevel to lure him there, so we'd probably not get him
anyway.

That's a lot of cash for 15 minutes a game.

But at least those are two good players we could have a (small) chance
to get. We have no chance of getting Chauncey Billups or Gerald
Wallace or Mo Williams, and getting Chucky Atkins or Eddie Jones isn't
going to help us nearly as much. Chucky and Eddie are the level of
player that Mitch has been pursuing. I think they could shoot at
least a little bit higher without breaking the bank.

If every one of these deals go through, I don't see the Lakers winning
more than +2 games, tops.
