The final tradebot deal

Okay, I've about worn out my obsession with coming up with possible
trades (as well as my welcome in the group :-). I hope that the
Lakers can pull off some trades for other players and Kobe will change
his mind, but in the event that they give in and trade Kobe, I think
our best bet is to try to get a few good young players and a couple of
draft choices.

I don't even care if we make the playoffs next year, just get young
players and give them playing time so they can develop. If you want
Bynum and Farmar to develop into their potential then give them big
minutes. And get 8 or more young players like them with lots of
potential. The ones that play best get the most minutes. Survival of
the fittest.

So here's the last of the "tradebot" trades. It's a 3 team deal with
Chicago and Atlanta.

Assumptions:

- Kobe will accept a trade to Chicago, if we leave enough team there
to be competitive

- Chicago would prefer to keep Hinrich and Deng, but would be willing
to give up both Bens and the #9 to get Kobe

- If Chicago trades away Ben Wallace, it would make the deal more
tenable if they got back some size

- Atlanta is very young, so they'd give up one of their draft picks
for a good experienced player. For an all-star, they'd give the #3
and a young player or two. That would keep them the #11 pick to pick
the best point guard available.

- some of my assumptions could be wrong. They're culled from what the
press has to say about the respective teams and players.

-------------------------------

Here are the terms of the trade:

The Lakers send Kobe Bryant, Ronny Turiaf, and the #16 pick to the
Bulls
The Lakers send Maurice Evans to Atlanta

Chicago sends Ben Gordon, Chris Duhon, and the # 9 pick to the Lakers
Chicago sends Ben Wallace to Atlanta

Atlanta sends Josh Childress, Marvin Williams, Lorenzen Wright, and
the #3 pick to the Lakers

Net results:

Chicago: maybe the team to beat in the East

C - PJ Brown, Turiaf
PF - Tyrus Thomas, Mike Sweetney
SF - Deng, Nocioni, Griffin, Khryapa
SG - Kobe, Evans, Sefolosha
PG - Hinrich
+ # 19, 49, 51 picks to fish for more big prospects in the second
round.

I don't think Kobe or the Bulls could claim that their roster got
raided with this deal. They get to keep 3 of their 5 starters and get
a big upgrade at SG. Turiaf gives them more offense than Ben did, and
good hustling defense. And they get a mid first round pick.

The #16 pick should give Chicago a player who can make their rotation
this year. And with as deep a draft as this one, there might actually
slide a flawed gem or two down to their 2nd round picks. draftexpress
has Glen Davis going to the #49 pick and Carl Landry at #51.
nbadraft.net has Glen Davis slipping even lower and Fullerton PG Bobby
Brown falling all the way to #59. It's a crapshoot who falls down
there, but they might find someone good.

--------------------------------------

Atlanta: maybe a playoff team.

C - Ben Wallace, Zaza Pachulia
PF - Shelden Williams, Solomon Jones
SF - Josh Smith, Maurice Evans
SG - Joe Johnson, Salim Stoudemire
PG - Speedy Claxton, Tyronn Lue, Anthony Johnson
+ #11

They give up some of their depth, but get a much more experienced and
solid Center. Wallace, Johnson, and Smith are a solid starting 3.
Shelden Williams was a #5 pick and with more playing time should
develop into a very good PF. Plus they have the #11 pick, where they
could probably get Acie Law with a slight chance that he's gone by
#11, in which case they get Javaris Crittendon. Or they could do what
they've done the last umpteen drafts and pick the best player
available at that position in the Draft.

If anyone rejects this deal, it's probably Atlanta. It all depends
how much they value experience vs depth. Basically the trade boils
down to Ben Wallace and Maurice Evans for the #3 pick plus Childress
and Marvin Williams plus salary filler. If they'd rather keep the
higher pick, they could make it the #11 pick plus Josh Smith and Zaza
Pachulia plus salary filler and I think the Lakers would also be fine
with that, since Smith has already advanced further than Childress.

Ben Wallace makes their defense much much better immediately, and they
still have plenty of offensive weapons, including Wallace's backup
Pachulia. OTOH, they may just decide to keep the 3 and the 11 picks
and draft the 2 best players available as they did the last couple of
drafts. Ben doesn't make them champs, but he might make them a
playoff team next year.

-----------------------------------

Lakers: lotsa youth, Lamar is now the star

C - Andrew Bynum, Kwame Brown, Lorenzen Wright
PF - Lamar Odom, Marvin Williams, Brian Cook
SF - Luke Walton, Josh Childress, Vlad Radmanovic
SG - Ben Gordon, Sasha Vujacic
PG - Jordan Farmar, Chris Duhon
+ #3, 9, 40, and 49 picks

This is a very deep, very young team. I think they're still good
enough to make the playoffs, though it might take a year or two until
they're really competitive there.

You can't get immediate value for Kobe, but with young players who are
pretty good and might not have reached their full potential yet
(Williams, Childress, Gordon), maybe you eventually get lucky and get
an all-star. The #3 and #9 also have some chance of bringing an all-
star to the team, though it's always a crapshoot. Even the 40 and 49
have potential in this draft. (e.g. draftexpress has Aaron Afflalo
falling all the way to 40. If that happens, you can bet the Lakers
take him)

It doesn't make sense to further deconstruct by trying to trade Lamar
for more draft picks, since you can only keep 15 players at the start
of the season. I might be looking to bundle a couple of these players
or trading them to another team for a future draft choice. Maybe now
the Lakers could come up with a package of players that Denver would
accept for Camby to shore up the Center position.

Anyway, that's the last tradebot trade for awhile.

I'll wait and see what the Lakers do.
