I have an old Netgear router (>5 years) and it seems to be on its
last legs. When I try to transfer files from my wireless laptop to
the wired destktop, transfer speed drops from 54 Mbps to 1 Mbps and
it takes 2 hours to transfer a few hundred megs. Also, when such a
transfer is in progress, my other wireless device (PPC) won't even
connect. Also I don't think I can even upgrade the router firmware to
newest security protocols. So basically I want a new router and I was
hoping some of you could chime in with recommendations. Thanks.

Are you sure one of your neighbors isn't hogging your bandwidth. I
would hit the reset button on the factory settings and see if that
makes a difference, if you haven't already done so.

Yes I am sure. I set an encryption key and I limited access by MAC addy.
Also, I don't broadcoast SSID and just to be sure I checked the log of
all connected devices. Under ordinary circumstances, things run fine -
only when transfering files from a wireless computer to a wired computer
is there a problem. My guess is the RAM is shot.

Have you tried wired-to-wired file transfer? If the RAM were shot, the
wired-to-wired would also be slower. How far away from the router is
the laptop? How much RAM in the laptop? Did you run "Task Manager" on
both machines during the transfer?

Have you checked you settings on both machines with Dr TCP?
