on line two, bob mcadoo...

sheeesh...

if I remember correctly, Bob refused to play in Portland so they didn't
have much choice.

but you bring up a good point. I made a post elsewhere highlighting our
"luck". Here it be:

if you think about it, it's a pretty cursed franchise on the whole.

Our first pick (Petrie) is good. Our 2nd pick (in 71)? Wicks. While he
won ROY (25-11-4..not bad) his stats went down every year he played.
One of the only players (if not THE only player) to do that. He was a
malcontent, and there's a reason no one remembers him fondly in
Portland. ;) Ironically, or maybe not, the year after he and petrie
were traded the team wins the title.

Anyways, when we get our first #1 pick? we draft a bust.

then our next #1 we draft a guy who, while he did help lead us to a
title, played in half of his games and wasn't anything like he
should've been.

we con ourselves into an ABA pick (Lucas..via Petrie trade in which he
retired) and also get Moses Malone. But we trade Moses.

then after our title, the team has major injury issues and didn't
compete for a title (realistically) for 13 more years.

our next #1 (which we got for a song, iirc)? Mychal Thompson. He was
taken in the same year as Bird..but had we taken Bird chances are we
wouldn't have been able to keep him like Boston did (because of
whatever loophole Red found).

He goes onto win an NBA title with the Lakers (at least 1..maybe 2?)
and basically acts like we don't exist cept when he wants to pine for a
job here.

We drafted Bowie. 'nuff said.

Then in 86, we draft both Sabonis and Petro, and neither one comes over
right away. And in the case of Petro, thrives in another NBA city. And
in the case of Sabonis, he doesn't come till almost 10 years later,
where he's a shell of his former self (altho still argubably our 2nd
best centre ever).

we reach the wcf's three straight years, but lose the one year we
would've had HCA in the finals.

we lose the 90 finals, despite Detroit not winning in Portland for 20+
games straight...and detroit wins their 2nd straight title.

we lose the 91 wcfs because the lakers are evil.

we lose the 92 finals and Juddan goes nuts with 3's...and they get
their 2nd straight title.

we reach the WCF's again in 99, which was a huge surprise...only to
have the memorial day miracle.

then we get Pippen, etc, and make the 2000 WCF's..only to (deleted for
reasons of sanity).

then the window slammed shut (etc..blah blah blah).

sure we made the playoffs 21 straight years, but of those years all but
6 or so were 1st and outs.

including a (at the time) record 6 straight 1st and outs.

the first time we get a really high pick in the draft, we trade it for
a player who hopefully will justify the trade, but missed out on a
player who was the ROY (and it's still debateable if that would've been
a wiser choice in the long run).

then, we have the worst record in the league and the best % chance of
getting the #1 pick...only to get the worst pick possible for our %'s.

where hasn't there been bad luck? Outside of winning a title (only to
have that team fall apart soon after) we've basically been a bad luck
team.

jinx? Oh if it were that simple.

its friggin unreal...

you guys shouldve made mcadoo come out... i mean *** get real, portland cant
be any worse than buffalo (as far as nba cities go)...

i have a new found respect for blazer fans, even the most diehard fan would
probably sooner or later say *** this ***...

it wasnt til the other day that i saw you guys didnt have the #1 pick in the draft...
maybe you will suck again next year and have a shot at oden... imo he is going
to be the best center since company time to come in the league... hey, maybe
you will be the last team to qualify for the lottery and get the #1 pick...

gotta put blazer fans right up there with cub fans now... sheeesh...

"ripped apart city!!!" :-)
