Harp or B-Shaw
The locker-room scene after the Lakers lost to Detroit on Sunday night
wasn't exactly despair. Part of it was that the Lakers didn't exactly
expect to win, part of it was that Pistons assistant coach Ron Harper
was in there. Harper, a key part of both the Chicago Bulls' and the
Lakers' dynasties, has a refreshing, fun-loving approach, offering quick
wit and sharp barbs with a regular undercurrent of the truth. He was
sitting with Kobe Bryant and Lakers assistant coach Brian Shaw, with
Phil Jackson stopping by momentarily fo ra laugh.
After Bryant pulled himself away from the chat to talk to reporters,
Jackson soon yelled out that it was time to wrap it up and get Bryant to
the bus, which would take the Lakers to their charter plane and on to
New York. Harper heard Jackson and then yelled out in his inimitable way
to Bryant while grinning: "C'mon, man! Your daddy said, 'Time to go!' "
Harper is in his first season as an assistant coach, and he's in a
pretty good place given Detroit's wild success. Even so, he might not be
politically correct enough to angle that quickly to become an NBA head
coach. Between him and Shaw, I'd say Shaw will get there faster --
perhaps even succeeding Jackson with the Lakers, who would also need to
consider Kurt Rambis, of whom Jackson is very fond.
