LAS VEGAS - What kind of NBA player would come home from a pickup game in the middle of summer and write out a list of all the things he could control on the basketball court?
Before he was ever traded to the Lakers, Laron Profit did exactly that. Maybe that's why the 28-year-old guard approached Friday night's preseason finale against Sacramento with such a sense of perspective.

Profit came up with three things on that list this summer. The first was playing hard. The second was playing smart. The third was being a good teammate. Everything else, he reasoned, was out of his control.

"You watch pickup games in the summer, you watch guys' reactions," Profit said. "It's like if they don't shoot the ball well, their whole day is ruined. You really have to be careful if you allow yourself to become frustrated with something you have no control over."

Playing for the final spot on the Lakers' roster, Profit had a strong game in the Lakers' 105-103 victory at Thomas & Mack Center. Rookie forward Devin Green, also fighting to make the team, had two points in 11 minutes.

Profit has experience playing in the Washington Wizards' Princeton offense last season, which uses a two-guard front similar to the Lakers' triangle offense. More importantly, he could be a valuable locker room presence.

While in Washington, Profit had the reputation as one of the few people who could reach forward Kwame Brown. It was an unusual pairing between Brown, the former No. 1 overall pick, and Profit, who played two seasons in China trying to get back to the NBA.

If this is true, then this alone would make Profit worth keeping. He could be Kwame's Jack Haley.
