I have no idea how good Will's source is on this one, but he lists
"Lester, a centerfielder, Masterson and Ryan Kalish." Of course if
it's Coco, then the Twins are probably cutting off their nose to spite
Hank. If it's Ellsbury then the Sox paid in full. Lester is a long
term health risk while Masterson might not be better than Marquez
which is indicative of how bad this package is. Kalish is a talented
OF prospect but he's too low in the system to matter as he's still at
lower A.

If it isn't Ellsbury, the Sox got him at a discount - no Lowrie either?
This doesn't bode well for the new GM in Minnesota; he may have made a
terrible deal for the best pitcher in the game.

Smith has a good reputation as a scout (He was Terry Ryan's protege).
Still, it's another matter to be a GM as Joe McIlvaine demonstrated.
Not every good scout is a GM material. Maybe he took Hank's bluster
personally. Out of all these names (if it's Coco) Kalish probably
will turn out to be the best player if his wrist is sound next year.
Masterson got pounded after the first turn through the Eastern
League. At least Marquez had a longer stretch of excellence the first
try through the Eastern League (and he was learning a new pitch).
Kalish played at Lowell before missing time with a wrist injury.

Good job by the Red Sox at this point..assuming the final package isn't
more
than what this report is saying.

Yup. I'd consider it a robbery.

I just don't get the pricing

Hughes-Lester
Melky-Coco (assuming that's the CF)
IPK-Masterson
Jackson-Kalish

Which Sox player/prospect is the superior one? I mean every single
comparison favors the Yanks. It's not just scouting reports but they
have much better numbers as well (and they competed in the same
leagues except Jackson-Kalish)

lester has been much better than phlop

Actually, no he hasn't.

coco is twice the fielder melky is.

Again, no he isn't. He does cost a lot more, though.

the other two are just throw ins-

They don't become "throw ins" just because you don't know anything
about them, Ray.
