Yankees, Loretta

Buster Olney just reported on Mike & Mike that the New York Yankees
are close to agreeing to terms with 2nd baseman Mark Loretta. This
would make absolutely no sense unless they are planning on shipping
Robinson Cano somewhere. Maybe for a certain left handed starter on a
team desperate for a middle infielder. Hank Steinbrenner has been
making it clear to anyone who will listen that Cano is untouchable,
but remember, it is the same Steinbrenner would said they would not
bring A-Rod back. Stay tuned for more details as they come available

I heard that discussion. Olney didn't say he was being pursued as a
replacement for Cano, though. He actually didn't really explain why
they wanted him at all, other than saying he'd be a "perfect fit".

He is certainly not a replacement. He no longer has the skills to be an everyday player. However, he would make a fine utility infielder, IMHO. And he has pitched an inning ;-)

Dave.
