To get Santana, Yanks would lose an impact player

NEW YORK -- If the Yankees want Johan Santana for the top of their
rotation, something catcher Jorge Posada yesterday said the team
needs, they will have to offer the Minnesota Twins a significant
package.

A person familiar with discussions, who asked not to be named because
he is not the chief decision-maker for his team, said Minnesota is
looking for "an impact guy and two major-league-ready or close to
major-league-ready players."

If they can't get such a package -- and the person said a Boston Red
Sox offer described in reports yesterday as center fielder Coco Crisp,
lefty Jon Lester and two prospects would not be sufficient -- the
Twins will keep Santana, see if they can contend next year and, if
they don't, look to deal him before the July trade deadline.

The person said the Twins want to see if "somebody knocks their socks
off" before they trade a star player while a publicly funded stadium
is being built. Players that fit the description include Yankees
second baseman Robinson Cano and two young Boston players --
outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury and pitcher Clay Buchholz.

An official with a team that has been involved in Santana talks (who
asked not to be named because of the sensitive nature of trade talks)
said the Twins want four players back but have recently changed their
stance. Instead of insisting that the players they get must fill their
holes -- center field, rotation and perhaps third base -- they are
willing to take players they can trade to meet those needs.

Meanwhile, Posada's insight into Andy Pettitte's situation seems to
add impetus to the Yankees' need for an ace.

Pettitte is deciding between returning to the Yankees and retirement.
Posada -- speaking on a conference call with media after his four-
year, $52.4 million deal was made official -- said he has had weekly
conversations with Pettitte. "Right now, he's leaning toward
retirement," Posada, said, adding Pettitte probably won't make his
decision until mid-January.

Agent Randy Hendricks, who has claimed Pettitte has no timetable for a
decision, declined to address Posada's assessment.

"Why should I comment on Jorge's speculation?" Hendricks wrote in an e-
mail.

A trade of Santana, a two-time Cy Young Award winner, does not seem
imminent. But the official expected the situation to be resolved
during next week's winter meetings.

Because Torii Hunter left to sign with the Los Angeles Angels, the
Twins need a center fielder.

"They're really hung up on Ellsbury from (Boston)," the official said,
"and (the Red Sox) won't give him up."

The Yankees could provide Melky Cabrera to fill that hole, and they
have not ruled out including pitcher Phil Hughes. He would help a
Minnesota rotation without Santana and Matt Garza, dealt this week to
Tampa Bay for outfielder Delmon Young.

The Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers are also in the mix for Santana,
said the person familiar with discussions. The Mets seem out of the
running because of the Twins' insistence on getting shortstop Jose
Reyes and the Mets' reluctance to sign a pitcher to a deal longer than
five years.

Santana, who for four straight years has led the AL in fewest hits
plus walks per inning, turned down Minnesota's offer of an extension
through 2012. He is seeking an extension through 2014 that would
likely exceed the $18 million annual average Barry Zito got a year
ago.

"We certainly need a No. 1," Posada said, "and I think that's one of
the reasons why we're going after Santana."

Four months ago, Posada caught Santana's 1-2-3 inning at the All-Star
Game.

"To face someone is completely different from catching him," Posada
said yesterday, "and I feel so comfortable with him. I was really,
really impressed with him in the All-Star Game. I would love to have
him."

Johnny Damon??????-

I think by "impact player" they meant postive impact on the team
winning games, so no, not Johnny Damon.
