The Sox and their fans just get more pathetic by the minute...

I thought we were done with the hyperbole and overblown celebrations
up this way(Cape Cod where I live, and Boston just to the north of us)
after Friday night's ridiculous over-the-top division clinching
display. Sadly, I was wrong. Major League Baseball sponsored public
get togethers in all of the respective playoff cities today - you'd
think Boston would have the grace and good sense to decline taking
part in this artificial silliness. I mean hey we're down to a "mere" 8
teams that could still win the REAL prize! All of the Boston
television stations LED with this "story" on their evening and late
night newscasts.."THIS JUST IN - The Red Sox make the postseason AS
EXPECTED - Film at Eleven"! I'm sure the local newspapers here will
also have pictures of this spectacle.on their front AND back pages
tomorrow morning.

This downtown pep rally was attended by the tens of thousands of
people. Players, fans, P.R. seeking public officials, bands, and other
assorted pets and human mascots of Red Sox Nation gathered in front of
a specially set up stage in Government Center. Even Red Sox majority
owner John Henry saw fit to make an ass of himself onstage "playing" a
guitar during one band's performance...what a bunch of buffoons. Thank
god New York City and The Yankee brass showed some dignity and class
and opted out of such a phony moment! IF we win the whole enchilada a
month from now we'll do it proud with a huge ticker-tape parade down
the "Canyon of Heroes". IF not we'll pack our equipment and quietly go
home for the winter months.

I would never begrudge Boston or any other city celebrating this way
AFTER they actually win something. Years back taking an AL or NL
pennant used to signify beating out a lot of other teams, and meant
that you were one of only two baseball squads to MAKE the World
Series. ALL playoff teams are still SEVEN wins away from attaining
even that level of success!! Boston, like many other teams at this
point, might still win it all. (They are favored by the oddsmakers I'm
told.) However, why not wait until that becomes a reality before
treating it as a special sports moment in time?!

You'd think after being a perennial playoff team, and winning it all
just three postseasons back, that they'd have a little restraint here
in New England! It brings to mind the practice these days of awarding
a "trophy" in youth sports to every participant for simply showing up.
I shudder to think of the cataclysmic event that will take place
should The Sox actually bring home the big trophy! It's almost time
for the REAL games to begin - "Pa"

p.s. - Just last year The Red Sox and our Yankees were quickly drummed
out of the first round of the playoffs. Both teams fans had already
channeled their sports energy towards their respective NFL teams the
very next day. We forget how quickly that all happened in 06' -
today's Beantown revelers will look like sad-sack clowns if it does
indeed play out that way again!
