SI Yanks

The SI Yanks were up this weekend for a series of games against
Lowell. A few brief observations for the folks here who follow the
minor league system:
- 3rd round pick Ryan Pope started last night. As advertised, he has
a really smooth and easy delivery. I read earlier this week that
they've been working on his mechanics slightly to have him stay back a
little more, and it looks like that may have taken a mile or 2 off the
fastball, but he still sat in the low 90s. He generates a lot of
swing-and-miss. I'm not sure how much of that was Lowell's lineup and
how much was him although he does appear to have some decent movement
on the fastball and mixes in a really nice curve. From my vantage, I
couldn't tell if the fastball had natural sink to it or if he was just
locating it down in the zone, but he kept the ball down nicely most of
the night.
- Outfielder Taylor Holliday (19th round) has a much better arm than
I had read about. Last night he made one of those throws that makes
you think your eyes played a trick on you, gunning down a runner
heading 1st to 3rd on a ball hit to CF. There appeared to be no
chance before the ball left his hand. Apparently, he's working around
the OF and also at 1B, although so far he's not showing enough power
to stick at 1st.
- closer Jonathan Ortiz does not throw terribly hard but makes a lot
of people swing and miss, mostly with a filthy changeup. Last night
he came in to the game in the 8th with runners on and struck out 5 in
2 IP. On Sunday he struck out 2 in 1 IP. For the season he has 43 Ks
in 25 2/3 IP between Tampa and SI to go with 5 in 3 IP at the GCL this
year.
- Ryan Zink (17th round) looked very good in relief of Chris Farley
on Sunday (who looked like he slept in a van down by the river). He
also doesn't throw terribly hard but seems very polished for this
league in terms of mixing up pitches and locating the fastball. We'll
have to see how that translates to higher levels.
- Olbrychowski (5th round) looked terrible on Saturday. I've read
recently where they are working with him on a number of things, so
that may explain it, but it wasn't pretty. He seemed to have very
good velocity, but the command was lacking. That was the knock on him
in the draft coming out of college as well, which is likely why he
fell to the Yanks despite a strong arm.
- 3rd baseman Braedyn Pruitt (14th rounder) is a very good looking
hitter with a very polished looking swing.
