The Yankees Deadline Day didnt end with giving first-round pick Andrew
Brackman a $3.3 million bonus as part of a $4.5 million guarantee big
league deal that could be worth a staggering $13 million.

Why can draft picks command so much money nowadays?
What leg do they have to stand on if the club balks?
If they don't sign, they have to wait a year
to sign with someone else. A year is year.
I don't get it.

The picks have value, though. If the Yanks don't sign their first 2 picks last year, no Joba and no Kennedy. The Yanks went through several years where they wasted draft picks on subpar talent. That had a real affect on the franchise.

California high school catcher Austin Romine, second round ($500,000).
<snip>
Texas third baseman Brad Suttle, fourth round ($1,300,000). His bonus
is a record for the fourth round.
<snip>
Georgia high school catcher Chase Weems, sixth round ($450,000).
<snip>
Texas high school outfield Taylor Grote, eighth round ($250,000).
<snip>
Louisiana high school shortstop Carmen Angelini, 10th round ($1,000,000).
<snip>

How does a 10th round pick command a million dollar contract???
The chances of a 10th round pick making it to the big club
seem like slim and none. What's up?

He fell to the 10th round because of doubts about whether he would sign at all and concerns over what it would cost. Signing him at $1M is a great pickup for the organization, who have no real middle infield talent other than Cano and Jeter apart from some very young toolsy kids in the DSL. When Angelini was drafted, there was serious doubt as to whether it was a wasted pick. The Yanks did a nice job convincing him that he could have a real future with the team, including an early invite to the Stadium after the draft. If they signed Peavy or Carpenter, both below Angelini, you would have likely seen something around $1m.

I really think they had a nice draft. We'll see what it looks like a few years from now, but they had a great draft last year and seem to have followed it up nicely.
