I think the only reason the Sox went after Gagne was to keep him from the
Yankees. If the Yankees could shore up their weak pen, They could make a
run.
Well, if that is the case, I am glad the Sox jumped in. I didn't want
Gagne from the start....Gabbard/Murphy are probably not impact
prospects, but they are both major leaguers. The 17-year old OF has a
lot of ability - but a lot of 17-year old OFers in the minors right
now have a lot of ability.
Regardless, I still think the Sox gave up too much; but you are
talking to someone who hated Jiminez-Witasick and Armaboles-Wohlers.
(two deals the Yankees made to "sure up" their pen in 2001).
Obviously, Gagne is better then those two guys were; but trading for
relief pitchers is a very risky thing to do, IMHO - and I just don't
think there's enough value in doing it.
