Re: Its rather amazing

Another "fool" play comes to mind, How about when a player is stealing
second & the hitter gets a hit on the play the shortstop will pretend the
ball is grounded to him to fake out the runner into sliding into second
impeding his ability to get to third. This comes to mind in the WS, Atlanta
vs MN. with Lonny Smith. The Braves lost the game on this play in my
opinion

It seems a little goofy, but I'm sure it happens all the time. I just
wouldn't think it ever worked. You always see infielders pretending
there's a ground ball then its a fly ball to confuse the runner.
Broadcasters tend to applaud that sort of thing.

It's like in basketball, when an offensive player is trapped;
sometimes, a defender will call for the ball. It never
works.....until that one time when someone actually does fall for it.

In your example, of course the most famous play was Lonnie Smith in
the WS; the Twins pulled that sucker play on him, and it worked like a
charm. I don't think I've seen it work quite that perfectly since
then.

He took advantage of a shaky rookie; again, not something I likely
would do, but also not something I consider to be a big deal. If the
fielder would have done his job (you know, catch the freakin ball), it
wouldn't even be an issue.
