I posted a similar inquiry re HD technology about a year ago and have yet
to make a purchase. I guess I simply lost interest and continue to watch my
12 year old Sony bigscreen.

Having said that, I have spent the past few weeks researching HD sets. I
have narrowed the search to Pioneer Elite plasma, Sony rear projection
SXRD, and Sony LCD flat panel.

What brand/model do you own and how does it handle sports (i.e., fast
action sequences)?

(I could have posted in tech groups but I believe I will get better info.
here)

I did a lot of research before switching and here is the short version
skinny:

Tube TV: The Good: The best blacks and sharpest HD picture The Bad: Bulky
and limited to 34". I own one, A Sony Wega and it is my favorite in the
house. I have three LCD's.

Plasma: The Good: Bright picture, no side view loss as in LCD's and
projections. The Bad: They work like a fluorescent tube, and therefore burn
out over time. The burnout comes on gradually, so the picture fades over
time. Also, they are prone to burn in when you have such things a tickers
running, etc. Plasma were popular when LCD's were limited in size, but with
new LCD technology, that advantage had passed and plasma's will soon be
history.

LCD's: The Good: No burn out, no bulk, bright vivid picture. Also, now are
much cheaper. My first, a 19" Samsung cost $1200 four years ago. My second,
a 26" Sharp Aquos, cost the same two years ago. Last November I purchased a
Vizio 37" for $899.00 and about a week ago, a Vizio 42" was in the same
store (Sam's Club) for the same price, $899.00.

DLP: A step up in technology in the projection market. It works with
millions of "mirrors" on a chip and I have seen some vivid pictures on some
models. These are not your father's rear projection. The come in very large
screens at the lowest price on the HD TV market.

The best thing to do is visit C-Net for reviews of these TV's and visit a
dealer to see the picture. CAUTION: Dealers love to show cartoons in their
displays because of the fixed. bright colors, but when you get it home and
play "Batman Begins" you could be disappointed in the "grayish" black
reproduction. Have them show you a variety of programming before making a
choice.

Some new companies are making an effort to break into the LCD market and
offer great deals and service. Vizio is one.
