I keep hearing people talk about what a great guy Ortiz is, but every
time I hear him whining about the MVP, I can't help but think that a
truly great guy wouldn't be so obsessed with his individual accolades.
You don't hear Jeter or even ARod discussion individual awards during
the course of the season, much less whining about them.

He may stop whining if this gets blown out of proportion. We have to
remember that Derek is probably among the best NYY players ever in
handling the media scrutiny. And Alex played it perfectly last year as
well. Up until now I don't think Ortiz has ever faced negative media
scrutiny from the Boston media which can be as vicious as any in the
US. I'm curious as to how Shank Shaughnessy will play this minor
episode.

Is it that minor? It's not like this is the first time he's said
this sort of thing. He whined about it last year, too. It seems
that Ortiz places a lot of value on individual accolades. Some might
say that he's not exactly putting his team first. Especially when he
makes comments trashing his teammates the way he did.
