You hear a lot of that these days. Athletes are told to try their best
and consider the results out of their control. Al Leiter was big on
that. Try that stuff in the real world and you get fired. "Yes, I
tried to make that sale. It just didn't work out. What can you do?""
In most jobs in the real world, you aren't expected to 'fail' quite as
often as you are in baseball. The best hitters fail 6 times out of 10. I
think it makes sense to stay positive, especially when a negative
attitude at the plate will in all likelihood make you fail more
often. If they continue to fail more often than they should, they still
get fired, but I don't think there's any harm in being approach-oriented
instead of results-oriented in the mean-time.
That was Peter Abraham's narrative, by the way, not mine. You have a point.
I think he was exaggerating his point for effect. You hear a lot of what
Lidle said in baseball these days. He was really awful yesterday. Its very
heard to believe he could have been as satisfied with his work as he made it
sound.
