Not just ARod, though he's leading the way. 1st and 3rd, no outs, bases
loaded 1 out and they come away empty. Cano strikes out to end it and I
don't think a single pitch eas a strike.
The last pitch to Cano bounced. A-Rod's ab was weak.
Cano should hit 9th.
Maybe Joe wanted to treat Cano like the next Rod Carew. Carew who was
a below average 2B (Robbie is now +12 FRAA which puts him among near
the top) batted 5th with the Twins in his second and third year. His
RBI totals were 42 (461AB) and 56 (458AB) when he hit .273 and .332.
Once Retrosheets updates the data, we'll be able to run through his
RISP numbers but I doubt he was any better than Robbie. Knock on wood
but Cano has the best hitting stroke on this team as Donnie pointed
out.
BTW, Peter Abraham wrote that the coaching staff didn't take it too
well when Alex told the press this May that a visit with Lou Piniella
helped him out of his early slump (which probably was taken as an
affront to Donnie). I think he's saying the right things in the
postgame interviews now, but it's truly amazing how the guy who has
retained his own PR firm just doesn't know how to keep his feet away
from his mouth.
I think his responses during the interviews after the last Angels
game were written by Jeter. It seemed like someone finally got a hold
of him and taught him the Crash Davis lines.
"Whether I am hitting .260 or .320, the bottom line is to win," A-Rod
said. "Hopefully I can get in the mix soon."
"Whatever (the slump) is, we have to move on," said A-Rod, who helped
fuel a two-run third inning for the Angels with a wide throw to second
on a sure double play ball. His ground single in the helped start a
five-run third.
"We have to keep grinding. It's important for me to play well down the
stretch and in October and we still have a chance."
"It was an awful series, personally," A-Rod said. "It's been
frustrating, but the only concern is winning.
