It was the best thing that could happen to Abreu's career. He's reportedly
a sensetive guy and about 2 years ago the Phils were testing the market on
his value, seemingly dangling him out in the market. It reportedly upset
him. I think this worked on Abreu's psyche and the last year and a half his
production has be sub-standard for the phils. I think that they possibly
felt that the final 2 years of his contract were too high (15.5 and 16
mil/year) For whatever reason, they felt he was expendable. At times he
seems lulled into appearing to not put forth an effort and even seemed
distracted sometimes in Philly. I think possibly that distraction was his
asking, 'do they really want me here.". Its obvious that the Yanks want
Abreu and have taken on the 2 most expensive years in his contract. That
has got to mean alot to Abreu. The only thing that the Phils could have done
to set things right with Abreu was to give him a vote of confidence and
perhaps guarantee his contract in his option year.
His performance as a Yank will determine the type of contract he will get in
a couple years. Will he be up there with Arod, Jeter and Giambi or will he
maintain something in the 15 mill/yr range or even be dropped down into the
12 million /yr range.
Of the 4 guys the Phils got, Hector Made and C.J. Henry could eventually
contribute at the major league level, but this was definately a one sided
trade talent-wise. For the guys the Yanks got, Philip Hughes and CJ.Henry
should have been included for Abreu and perhaps the catcher and Smith or
Made for Lidle.
Lidle seems to do better each time he moves to a new team and has new
surroundings. He'll do well in the final stretch, but time will tell how
he'll do next year.
Phils have also been dangling Burell and I'm sure that they offered him to
the Yanks instead of Abreu, but of course the Yanks chose Abreu. It doesnt'
seem to have effected Burell as much as he probably realizes that his
contract is too high for his performance and output. His contract was
written based mostly on one years improvement and his projected further
improvement. Although being a solid contributor, he hasn't reached those
projected improvements.
The phils will also be facing the fact that Howard, Utley and Hamels will be
needing bigger contracts, thus because they dont' have the mentality of the
Yanks ownership, of money no object.
In some ways, paying the best players to play on your team is the way to go,
but it can and has backfired.

As much as I love to see Bernie playing every day, the acquisition of
Abreu will go down as one of the best deals ever made. Getting Lidle as
part of that deal makes it even sweeter. Many great players take a while
before "earning" their pinstripes. Abreu fit right in. It will be
interesting to see what happens with Sheff and Matsui. Melky has been a
catalyst for this team and cannot be overlooked. He has an excellent
throwing arm and is one of the smartest base runners I have seen in a long
time. He caught Willy Mo snoozing out in RF earlier in today's game and
stretched his hit to a double. He also had the timely steal before
Abreu's RBI double. He has been doing these type of things all season
long. It's hard to believe how young he is. The same can be said for
Cano. Who said there was no talent left in the farm system?
All of a sudden, this Yankees team has a lot of speed....Damon, Cabrera,
Abreu, Cano, Jeter and Rodriguez. Despite the tiring schedule, they seem
to be busting their gut on every hit. It's nice to see this "fire" again.
It has been lacking since Paul O'Neill's departure.
The bullpen has also been doing quite well....especially the way Villone
has been chewing up innings. I hope they can keep this up straight
through Sept/Oct.
Go Yanks!
