Re: Tigers reject Loretta trade

Why does every proposed trade by the boy Genius Theo make its way into
the Boston papers? Andruw Jones, Oswalt, Buehrle, etc. They're always
ridiculously one sided deals that have no real chance of happening but
continue to perpetuate the Theo myth that he's the smartest guy in the
room.

Actually, many of the deals he ends up doing don't get the same
publicity as the ones he doesn't do...maybe some radar block employed
by the front office?

And its not like the Yankees operate behind a shield of silence in the
New York media either. Only thing is they are always listed as a
potential landing spot for pretty much every player that goes on the
market. Both cities are tough spots to be a covert-style GM...

When the reality is that every season he's desperate to dump
last years genius move. Whether it's Renteria or Crisp. I'm sure that
he'll be desperate to dump Lowell and Gonzalez over the winter and
Loretta is obviously gone since they have Pedroia on the way.

Loretta was a terrific one year stop gap to allow Pedroia to season in
the minors a bit more (which he has done...very good numbers in AAA).
They didn't give up much to get Loretta.

As with any GM, there are good deals and bad. Theo has done his share
of finding guys as well as getting guys who, for whatever reason, don't
cut it. And its not like Cashman doesn't have the same problem year in
and year out too. For every Matsui, there's a Contreras. For every
Sheffield, there is a Weaver. These two teams are like perpetual
motion machines in terms of players...the law of averages says it won't
always work out...
