Of course, that means tomorrow we'll see Long hitting 4th, Cairo 2nd and

make changes. He's only playing Phillips because Cairo is in the lineup
anyways with ARod out AND Giambi is hurt. If Giambi is healthy, and/or
Arod is healthy, does Phillips play? If both are healthy, does Phillips
play over Bernie? Probably not. As for Thompson, Torre often does give
rookies their 1 game when they first come up before burying them. I
want to see Thompson play a few more games quickly before giving Torre
credit there.
Phillips plays as long has he continues to hit. Torre has always played
the hot hand.
already this season.
What hot hand has he sat down?
Not directly answering your question, but how often has a rookie even
had the chance to get hot under Torre? He doesn't play them with any
regularity for it to matter, unless he is absolutely forced to, in which
case he isn't going to have the option of removing them if they are
struggling.
I think there's a difference though in the way Joe treats certain
rookies. He did fine with Nick, Doza, Juan Rivera and some rookie
pitchers like Boehringer, Mecir and unprovens like Weathers. I think
he's just a snob when it comes to judging young talent. If he thinks a
UFA or a low draft pick languishes and gets a shot in the majors
finally, he trusts the system (which is laughable as I remember some
horrible decisions over the last decade or so by the minor league
management) that the kid might not have what it takes. This is where I
think he really differs from someone like Martin who could squeeze a
scrub dry to find some use for him as long as it helped him win games.
If Joe had been in Martin's shoes back in the mid 1980s (not that I'd
ever pick Billy over Joe in any circumstances despite his tactical
brilliance), there is no way stiffs like Ray Fontenot or Joe Cowley
would even last two weeks in the majors. Billy got something out of
them. If Joe thinks a kid can't play at the ML level, he's just not
going to play him. He's not that way with great prospects though.
