Breakout pitchers

Tom Verducci, SI.com
{snip}

2. Chien-Ming Wang, 26, Yankees The cool right-hander is a strike- and
groundball-throwing machine, getting through his average inning as an
AL rookie with only 13.7 pitches. Pitching for a team loaded with
offense, Wang is a near lock to win 15 games -- but as long as he stays
healthy, still a concern among the New York executives.

Wasn't Wang supposed to get rotator cuff surgery but opted to just rehab
physically? if so, it sounds as if he's a lock for the DL.

I'm not sure that's accurate. I don't remember any diagnosis of
surgery being required.

I thought he was reccomended for surgery by Dr. Andrews after seeing MRI's.

You may be right, but I don't recall that. The speculation was that he was hurt worse than the Yankees admitted, but then he returned and pitched effectively, and has not had off-season surgery. If he really needed surgery, I would have expected he would have been scheduled as soon as the Yanks were eliminated, with the hopes of having him back in 2007. Anyone remember this better than me who can clarify?
