Well let's discuss a few prominent Yankees who became Red Sox players. Mike
Stanley was treated well by Yankee fans. David Cone was treated
respectfully, though there were comments along the lines of thinking he was
retired. David Wells has not been treated badly by Yankee fans. Elston
Howard was a Yankee great who ended his career in Boston and helped the Red
Sox win the '67 pennant. I don't think the Yankee fans begrudged him that
one last opportunity.
Generally, if a good Yankee player is allowed to go to another team via free
agency, management is blamed....not the player.
