Well, I didn't want him there, either, because he's a huge upgrade over
what you had in CF last year. But I didn't want the Red Sox to sign
him to a big contract, either. Frankly, I think that they're alleged
first offer, $27 million for 3, would have been overpaying, but not too
badly. I didn't want him to take the $40 million for 4, because it was
way too much...

Well, there's some of that, I suppose, in some quarters. Not from me.
I didn't like the signing when the Red Sox brought him in 4 years ago,
and the hype didn't interest me at all. He was a very good Fenway Park
hitter, however, so it worked out much better than I expected. And his
2004 season was very good.

But I didn't have any interest in them extending him for 4 years this
off-season. None. There are certainly sour graps in some parts of Red
Sox Nation, but not here. "So long, Johnny, and thanks for all the
fish..." I'd rather have him declining for the next 4 years in NY than
in Boston. But in 2006, it certainly helps the Yankees, because there
was a black hole there that isn't there anymore.
