It doesn't mean squat. In 2004 he hit better at Jacobs Field. At his age
we can't possibly say what his career trajectory will be. He could be the
next Andre Dawson or Rondell White. Every nonsensical piece we read about
how the Yanks didn't have a true leadoff hitter since Knoblauch lost it
applies more so to Crisp (even though Jeter is a top leadoff hitter which
makes the need to put Damon at leadoff completely unnecessary). At this
point, Crisp doesn't take too many pitches (3.48 P/PA) and his OBP relies
heavily on BA which is the reason why I bring up RonDL comparison. Crisp
was not considered a good CF (His FRAA was -8 in 2004 which was the only
year he played CF for an extended period) and is slightly above average as a
LF (His FRAA in 2005 was +3). Damon on the other hand was an above average
CF defensively until 2005 (His FRAA ratings were usually +5 to +7). He fell
off considerably and ended at (-5). Now whether it was due to the
accumulated injuries or whether he was 31 we won't find out until next
season obviously. The danger obviously is the age, but the Yanks did fine
in terms of length. Cashman wasn't offering any more years than what the
Sox were offering. Just two mil per more (which is reasonable if you wanted
Damon to leave Boston) which is chump change for teams like the Yanks and
the Sox and more than worth it if you consider the aggravation it eliminated
for the Yanks and the headache it created for the Sox.

What are the Sox fans going to do? Admit that the front office mistake cost
them Andy Marte who might prove far more useful a lot sooner (as I think
Lowell is a shell of his former self and the rest of the infield will have
minimal SLG)? The nonsense about how the Sox saved money by letting Damon
go was absolute crap. They were going to spend at least 10mil and Lucchino
made it clear that they were willing to go a little higher possibly to
11mil. That is why Cashman correctly read that 12mil wasn't going to get it
done and went up to 13mil (since why should Damon want to leave for the
extra mil per when he's more than comfortable in Boston) to pry him away.
The extra money they saved on Damon deal helped to pay for the outrageous
salary for Edgar Renteria ($10mil salary + $11mil sent to the Braves) for
one season of incompetence. Nice deal Theo. Whoever made the decision in
Theo's absence among the GM's in Boston should be given the real GM
portfolio for getting Marte from John Schuerholz. It's not easy to best
Schuerholz in a deal.
