So why did we spend millions on Damon if Crisp is just as good? Methinks Lupica is trying to be provocative.
Lupica is right.
NY (over) spent millions on Damon for a number of reasons:
1. Nobody to trade for a quality CF. 2. George likes mature veterans. 3. To make a publicity splash and sell tickets. 4. To try to hurt the Red Sox.
Crisp is pretty comparable to Damon right now in performance, and is far cheaper giving the Red Sox $10 million/year to spend elsewhere.
By the end of Damon's contract Crisp will probably be vastly superior.
1. Coco Crisp is horrible from the leadoff spot. 2. Coco Crisp is a left fielder and his numbers in center are bad. 3. He cost them their top prospect. .
