The Yankees need to pay them enough money to turn them into athletic
automatons.
Give them high enough salaries to make them unhittable and to ensure that
their emotional and physical conditions never, ever impact their
performance. This way if either dares have a bad outing, people can throw
up their hands in disgust ranting about another overpaid, underperforming
player, the ineptitude of the pitching coaches, Torre's cluelessness for
putting him in the game, and the stupidity of the front office for giving
him such outrageous sums of money. Oh, and let's throw in a "Can't take
the pressure of New York" for good measure.
;-P
Seriously, maybe I'm just conditioned to hearing much higher numbers, but I
don't think either Chacon's or Small's initial request is out-of-line.
Certainly if Chacon earns a spot as a regular starter, something closer to 4
mil than the Yankees' counteroffer seems fair. And while I'm a little
cautious that Small will do as well in 2006 as he did in 2005, I'd be ok if
he's given a contract of 1.25 millionish or so.
