Re: Giles Gets Call

Is anyone concerned that Giles' post season offense has been pretty
meager? Fifty ABs, nine hits, eight BBs in six post season
appearances. Correct these stats if needed.

Post Season Sample
----------Giles (22 Games) ---Matsui (28 Games)
OBP ---------- .305--------------- .395
BA ----------- .180 ---------------.339
SLG ------------.280 ------------- .583
RBI ------------- 2 ---------------- 24

Or does this simply imply "the sample is too small" for Giles?
Probably the case because his 2005 numbers are decent when compared to
Matsui and Sheff:

2005----Giles--------Matsui-----Sheffield
OBP ---- .423 ------- .367 ------- .379
BA ------ .301-------- .305 ------- .291
RBIs ----- 83 --------- 116 ------- 123
HRs ------ 15 --------- 23 --------- 34

I would've loved this guy a couple of years ago, but I guess I'm on
the fence with regard to bringing yet another older guy even though
the brain trust here feel his "skillset" can't diminish... or at least
are less likely to diminish. Nobody seems to want to discuss whether
an older player breaks down physically, however small that breakdown
might be... except when they want to be critical of a player. See...
I look at Damon and I don't want him period. He has no arm, and I
know this guy can't get better, plus I don't know if he's ready to
collapse, and he wants gazzillions? But OTH, you could take the
posture that Damon can play at this level and contribute offensively
for the next 3-4 years. Who really knows?

Giles hasn't played CF on a regular basis for the past 5 years, and I
just wondered if he had/has the ability to play it well. He's played
CF 38 times since the start of the 2002 season as opposed to over 400
starts as the LF'er, and just over 282 as a RF'er. If we do get him,
it'll be interesting to see where they bat him... 2nd?
