Re: Today's Hernandez & Darling take on Mets 2010.

Phillips, IMO, is the real wasted talent.  He let his personality
destroy his above average abilities...a trait he sshared, BTW, with
Bobby valintin

He did sign and draft both Reyes and Wright (and Kazmir).

There's a big difference at this point between being a great talent
evaluator and being the general manager of a large market baseball
team. Frankly, I don't really care if the guy at the top is a great
talent evaluator. He can HIRE great talent evaluators. What I want
is somebody who can manage those under him, manage the Wilpons, manage
the media, and manage the fanbase. That's really what's important.
The GM doesn't do his own scouting . . . he gets reports. He isn't
out there watching minor league games. There are scouts for that. He
makes decisions based on information given to him by others.

Abraham Lincoln is a particular hero of mine because when he was
elected he promptly filled his cabinet with all of his opponents,
because he knew they were the best people for the jobs. Everybody
thought he was nuts and thought for sure he'd be marginalized in his
own administration. Instead he arguably became our greatest president
because he MANAGED those people. That's what a GM in NYC needs to be
able to do. He needs great management and communication skills.
Baseball acumen you can hire.
