I've alsways thought that those Steve Phillips teams of 1998-2000 were
so interesting because they were designed around the infield and
bullpen, with most of the starters and the outfield being little more
than complementary pieces.
I loved the 1999 Mets. I really did. That may be my favorite Mets
team ever. I wasn't alive to see 1969. 1986 was terrific, but I
thought the 1988 team was better. But in 1999, I thought that team
was the best team in baseball. I really did. They lose to the Braves
in a series with 5 1-run games and 1 2-run game. If they beat
Atlanta, they give the Yankees a real series instead of just laying
down and dying the way the Braves did. That team still holds the Mets
team records for R, H, BB, OBP, OPS, and E. That offense was a
machine. It just wore people down and produced runs in bunches.
