Santana vs Moyer tonight. Despite a crushing loss yesterday, the
series is still split. Everything is lined up the way most of us would
have wanted, with a serious advantage in the pitching matchup.
So of course Manuel decides to bench Ike and Pagan, and to play...Gary
friggin' Mathews Jr?
A few possible reasons:
1: The lefty-righty thing: Apparently GMJ, batting about 0.000 as a
righty, is still a righty, and therefore -must- be in the game against
a lefty pitcher. Except Pagan is a switch hitter, and can probably hit
better than GMJ left-handed and with his eyes closed.
2: The players are tired and need a rest: Except they just had a day
off two days ago, and have another day off this coming Thursday. Ike
and Angel are both young and in good shape. We're not talkiing about
resting an aging Alou.
3: Gary Matthew Senior is in Philly, so we gotta get his kid in the
lineup. I have no counter to that.
Well, at least this is not such an important game that we'd need to
treat it like game 7 of the World Series, like say, the marathon game
with the Reds. It's not like a loss would drop us out of first place,
or make it appear that Manuel has no clue about managing in the major
leagues.
This is the down-side of having won 9 in a row: Manuel is still in
there, and managing like this is a little league team. Every kid
needs to play, especially if his dad is in the seats.
So who will bat leadoff tonight? Hopefully not GMJ.
You forgot the 4th reason. Manuel has no business being a manager.
