Doesn't seem clear, although it appears he played in the minors.

Just to point out just how great of a hitter he was, 4 times he hit over
160 OPS+, including three years in a row in Brooklyn.  Evidently from the
Article, he was swinging for the fences in the dead ball era, putting him
in conflict with the hitting coaches :)

Makes you seriously wonder why so many teams gave up on him. Too much
money? Bad attitude? His fielding didn't appear to be bad, so I have
to
wonder...
