He tells Mike that there will be a lot of new faces among the backup
players. Is this really something that will make a huge difference?
Will the new guys play fundamentally sound baseball, as Jerry said
this team would this year? My guess is that the problem with this
team is organizational. They need one person to come out and tell the
public what they intend to do about their many problems, and that
person must be held accountable (if he doesn't fire those who are in
charge of that particular area of failure). In any case, I want to
hear about adding a top starting pitcher and at least two very good
position players (LF, C, and/or 1B).
Let's think about how ridiculous Jerry's statements in that interview
were. He liked Pagan's play, though he's clearly not someone you know
you can count on for 150+ games next year (at a high level). Mike
mentioned Daniel Murphy, and though there was no explicit statement,
it seemed clear that Jerry was done with DM. So what is the answer?
Let's change the backup players we have! For a "backup," DM had a
great year. It was Jerry and Omar who told us he was ready to be a
full-time position player at the beginning of the year! I have no
problem with DM, Pagan, Tatis, and Hernandez as the backups. The key
question is, who are the starters? The impression I got from Jerry is
that he doesn't expect any major signings, and of course they won't
get much for Reyes even if they decide to trade him (if they even
can). So they expect fans to pay big money to see the same team, but
with different backup players? Good luck with that idea!
