I don't know what that limit was, but it was his first start in the majors; the radio broadcasters were speculating that the feeling was probably that if he put in 4-5 innings it would be a good thing (regardless of how many innings he actually stayed in for).
Presumably they were looking for that point at which loss of effectiveness was clearly a matter of fatigue, and not the Padres' amazing hitting prowess, bad umpire calls, bad pitch calls, etc.
Unfortunately they found it in the third inning...
