Can't comment on the latter (being before my time) but the former can be
underlined with this single factoid: Kingman led the NL in homeruns with
37 in 1982, but his batting average was only .204. That was 14 points
LOWER than the batting average of the NL Cy Young award winner that same
year, Steve Carlton.
