Why was Nolan Ryan so dominant well into his 40's, while Tom Seaver,
who had great mechanics and a regimented workout schedule was
basically done by 40? What was Ryan taking?

and beating the crap out of Robin Ventura......both sure signs he was
suffering 'roid rage. The question should be what are YOU taking?

With all due respect to Ryan, he struck out, (and walked) a lot of
players.  His lack of control prevented him from
being a Tom Seaver.

Nolan Ryan was not in the same class as Seaver.
 W  L          ERA
324 292        3.19
311 205        2.86

So he won 13 more games and lost  87 more games.  Ryan when you get
down to it  was basically  a .500 pitcher, with a great fastball and
problems with control.  When he was on he was great.   Seaver
transformed the Mets.

Saying he wasn't a Tom Seaver is no insult to Ryan, Ryan carved his
own place in history but he wasn't a winner.

But the point is, Seaver did his best work before the age of 40, while
Nolan, although not as good as Seaver, was still doing his thing and
going strong at 43. Players that do so well at the end of their career
have been steroid users in the past. Look at how Bonds, Clemens, and
McGwire ended their careers. They were still All Star caliber
performances at the very end of their careers. Now look at Cal Ripken,
Derek Jeter, Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux, etc. As time went on, they were
still pretty good but there was a gradual regression. This happened
with Seaver too. It usually doesn't happen with steroid users.
