As for which pitcher would be the best fit for the Mets, I think Ollie is
the one most likely to be healthy and effective four years from now (at
which point he'll turn 31). Also, it's worth noting that the Phils
essentially traded Pat Burrell for Raul Ibanez this off-season, thus
making
them an almost-entirely lefty-hitting team; as such, someone who eats up
lefties like Perez is likely more valuable to the Mets than a
sinkerballing
righty.- Hide quoted text -

I just don't want Perez back for anything longer then a 2 year deal.
I'm sorry.  He scares the hell out of me.  I hate a pitcher who is
unreliable, especially in a rotation right now that has Santana, one
unproven up-and-comer (Pelfrey), another unreliable starter (Maine),
and a guy who, at his best, is probably a league-average 'innings-
eater' (Redding).  The nightmare is you give this guy 10-12 million a
year, and then he falls apart.  I can completely see that happening.
Now you're stuck with him.

====================

The other side of that coin is that, like many lefties before him, Perez is
something of a late bloomer and finally puts it all together in a consistent
way.  Granted, he's his own worst enemy, but the league isn't littered with
27-yr-old lefty power arms.  And, as of right now, there's not much else on
the market, particularly in terms of lefties, worth jumping at.

=====================

The Mets aren't the Yankees.  They haven't
shown an inclination to pull a Pavano and just completely throw a guy
aside even though he's been terrible.  They'll keep throwing him out
there.  I'd actually rather make a low investment into a guy like
Pedro Martinez at this point and let him, Redding, and Niese battle
for the last two spots and try to piece it together.  Worst case, you
can go starter hunting at the trade deadline.
=====================

Signing Perez now is like buying ice cubes: You pay for the luxury of
convenience.  I'd rather make the investment, have him fall apart and then
try to find a way to liquidate him than count on someone like Pedro as the
fourth starter.  That's a bet Omar has to make, especially with all the
lefty bats the Phils have stockpiled.

I firmly believe the Phillies have generally gotten worse. I think
the Marlins will be better, and I think the Braves will be better
because with Lowe and Vazquez, they'll at least have 3 reliable
starters, something they didn't have last year. I think the jury is
out on the Nats. I'm not sure anybody knows where they are at this
point.

I think your point is well-taken, but he still scares the hell out of
me. This reminds me of the Castillo contract. I know they're not
comparable players and in different career places and everything, but
the idea of giving a player you don't have confidence will be good for
the duration of his contract a multi-year contract just scares the
hell out of me. There are special cases like Pedro Martinez, but the
Mets aren't in the same place they were when they gave that contract
out. The market isn't in the same place. I was against the Lo Duca
trade, against the Castillo contract, and I'll be against the Perez
contract if it's longer then 2 years. I'd be overjoyed to be wrong,
but I think the Mets will regret that contract.
