They are always pulling some blockbuster deal off at the last minute.
Usually its all done behind the scene and nobody has any idea until
its announced. Would not suprise me at all if the Braves put together
a package for Santana.
Why not?
I mean, they only traded half of their farm last year to get Texiera. (And
they dealt another top prospect to get the decidedly mediocre Mark Kotsay).
Besides, the Braves are a deep-pocketed organization that should have no
qualms about ponying up $20 million per year for a pitcher.
Keeping along with this, unless Atlanta has another 4 top prospects to
deal, there is no worry that Atlanta will get their hands on Santana.
Keep in mind they traded for Tex, but since Boras screwed the pooch
with A-Rod...I'm thinking Tex is undoubtedly going FA at the end of
the year so he can try to repolish his good name.
According to their website, "...Since assuming ownership of the Braves
in May, Liberty Media has been pleased with the club's financial
returns. This isn't likely going to be a long-term partnership between
these two parties, and as they get ready to sell the Braves in a few
more years, the bigwigs at Liberty are simply looking to make the
club's financial ledgers as attractive as possible..."
If Santana was a FA, I'd be worried. If Atlanta makes a move on
Santana it would be December, 2008. Which makes it even more
important now to trade and sign him long term. That still begs the
question whether or not Atlanta can swing a long term deal when all
Liberty is looking for is a quick fix to sell the team in a couple
years.
