Generally I agree with you, however, when basically there is a
consensus that other GM's view the Mets farm system as less then
impressive, that seems pretty telling.
To put things in context, though, we've now seen three former blue-chip
outfield prospects (Milledge, Dukes, Quentin) be dealt for
less-than-impressive returns. I remember reading something about none of
these guys could fetch as much as a fourth starter. That's very telling
about the market Omar is currently facing.
If you look at the deals that
are being discussed or the deals that have been done (the Cabrera
deal), you realize the Mets are going to have a big problem going
prospect to prospect.
On the day of the Milledge trade, Ken Rosenthal contended that, even if the
Mets ponied up all their top prospects in one deal, it wouldn't be enough to
land them a front-end starter in this market.
I think it was Jon Heyman today who made the
point that against a team like the Dodgers, the Mets have no shot.
If it is true that the Orioles already turned down Humber, Heilman,
and Gomez for Bedard . . . then I really don't think the Mets can
realistically put together a package for any of these pitchers.
I think the only way would be for them to package Martinez _and_ Gomez with
either Mulvey or Pelfrey. And I just don't think it's worth it at this
point.
And, considering the potential free-agent market for 2008, it might make
sense to consider a cheaper, stopgap and then hope that one of their young
starters takes a step forward this year. But I don't think you can auction
off every prospect, simply because the current market has gone crazy.
For the record . . . I wouldn't trade Wright or Reyes for any pitcher
in baseball. I think people are dramatically underestimating what it
would take to replace either player. I'm not sure without that the
Mets can pull off a deal.
The other option would be to move away from the Santana/Haren/Bedard group
and instead look at teams with a surplus of second-tier starters that
wouldn't cost as much. The Pirates, for example, probably have too many
starters (especially if Sean Burnett comes back), including one -- Matt
Morris -- they'll be hard-pressed to move. You have to wonder whether
someone like Gomez could bring back a Gorzelanny, a Duke or a Maholm.
