My final comments on Milledge trade.

One last thought about Milledge. I sincerely which him the best in
Washington, although I hope he struggles against the Mets. But as a 22
year old kid (1st round pick), I will hate to see him 18 times a year
for the next several seasons vs the Mets.

Still, it's life as a Mets. I think he is a clear example on how the
media can destroyed your value and mark your career by playing in
NY.....specially for the Mets. For sure if he would have been with the
Yankees, media would have looked at him from another perspective. Yet
as a Met, they were focusing more on issues than his ability to play
the game. Eventually the bad rep created really hurt his value as a
player.

Look at this way, the Rays traded Delmon Young (22, $1.3 million sal)
who also had some character issues early in his career and got Garza
from the Twins (main players), while Milledge (22, $383K sal) got
traded for a 4th OF and a backup catcher. Just a glance of Young vs
Milledge:

Best Minor League Season
Ab Avg Obp Slg Ops
Hr Rbi Sb Cs
Young 2005 Double A 330 .336 .386 .582 .968 20 71 25
8
Milledge 2004 Single A 261 .337 .399 .579 .978 13 58
23 6

Lastings 2005 in Double A wasn't bad either (.337/.392/.487/.879)

Minor League Career numbers:
Avg Obp Slg Ops Ab Hr Rbi Sb Cs
Young .317 .341 .517 .858 1,413 59 273 75 22
Milledge .303 .378 .473 .851 1,100 30 150 73 37

2007 season
Avg Obp Slg Ops Ab Hr Rbi Sb Cs
Young .288 .316 .408 .724 645 13 93 10 3
Milledge .272 .341 .446 .787 184 7 29 3 2

And I'm not factoring parks, league and how Milledge is a more
athletic player than Young. Something to consider when both are
getting into the mid to high 20s. Too bad, I thought the Mets just
need it to put Lastings in RF and let him grow like Reyes and Wright
did. And he would have cost less money and put better numbers than
Church (29).

Now it's back to reality and we have to hear how Santana will end up
with the Yankees or Boston (rich getting richer) and how the media
continues to write down how the Mets prospects (Pelfrey, Humber,
Gomez, Martinez, Mulvey, etc) are not good enough to get Haren or
Bedard. But how they should trade those same players for D Willis. Are
you kidding me? Do they actually know something about baseball? Some
day an article will be in the papers on how the Wilpons collaborated
with Osama Bin Laden to create 911, setting up Piazza's HR vs the
Braves to bring emotion to the city.
