I don't think the money is the problem . . . I think it's the tangible
and intagible commitment you're making. You're also making a
statement to your fan base and the rest of the game that you're
interested in enabling a player who clearly doesn't care about
anything other then himself. If they want the budget to be 200
million, the budget can be 200 million.
But if they do sign A-Rod what should the Mets do with their infield.
I would try to move Wright to 2nd and play A-Rod at 3rd.
I really think this idea that players can just easily change positions
is really inaccurate. I don't see any evidence that David Wright
would be a good second baseman, whether it's the fact that he's never
played there or the fact that he doesn't really have the body type of
a typical second baseman. To me, it would be more likely that he'd be
learning the position, which would cause his offense to struggle . . .
which has happened to more then one player who tried to switch
positions.
Other options would be to play A-Rod at 2nd, which he would likely reject.
Not if he wants to win . . . but oh wait . . . this is Alex Rodriguez,
who really doesn't care about winning.
Play Reyes at 2nd and A-Rod at SS.
Reyes is more tempermental then Wright. I'd be REALLY afraid he would
take his defensive struggles to the plate with him.
They can alos trade Reyes or Wright. It's easy to say trade one of them for
Santana but it is hard to assume what the Twins are willing to do.
I think trading David Wright should get Omar fired. I think trading
David Wright should get any GM fired. This is just not a player you
should ever consider trading. In terms of Reyes, I suppose it's
something to consider. That being said, I think it's a reach to just
assume Alex Rodriguez can still play shortstop. He's over 30 now,
he's bulked up a bit from his shortstop days, and he hasn't played it
in 4 years. I wouldn't be very confident he would just be able to
suddenly be a gold glove shortstop again.
