So again is he worth it? I'm going
with..."no".
Starting pitching is not an immediate concern for the Mets, and the
knowledge that we'll have a healthy Pedro ready to go in 5 weeks or
less
makes any trade for Buehrle a waste of resources.
It seems to me that if they're talking about Buerhle, it probably means
that
they're not confident about Pedro.
Also, if you operate under the assumption that they will need to replace
Glavine with a front-of-the-rotation pitcher, then you have to ask
yourself
where that pitcher is going to come from.
The Mets need a power-hitting left fielder, since Alou may be done for
the season. I'd rather have Jermaine Dye that Buehrle.
I wouldn't mind getting both of them.
Michael, the part of HB's post I agree with is that SP is not an
immediate need.
I'm not sure this team doesn't need a true, 200-inning front-of-the-rotation
pitcher. This rotation has a big gap between its aging,
holding-on-by-a-thread veterans and its still-establishing-themselves
younger arms. Buehrle would fit right in the middle; he'd make the rotation
better instantly, and would likely be pencilled in for 200 innings every
year, which is something they don't currently have.
We really do have a serious need for a #1 or #2 pitcher if we want to
win a World Series or three. But just another pitcher for our rotation
may not help much now.
I don't think Buehrle is just another pitcher for our rotation; I think he's
one of the top 10 starters in his league. The only thing that concerns me
is the wear and tear on his arm from all those innings pitched.
Having a guy like Santana, a spot on Carlos Z or Dontrelle W, would be a
great addition to our team this year or next. I would love to go into a
series with another team worried our #1 might pitch two games if they
let it get that far.
While I think Santana is the best pitcher in this thread, I'm not sure
Zambrano is better than Buehrle. I definitely think Buehrle is better than
Willis.
Frankly, if we are going to trade valuable commodities, I would prefer
to trade for what we actually need
What do the Mets actually need? I'd love to get a bat for the outfield, but
I'm guessing that Milledge, Gomez and Martinez are better bets to fill that
hole than Pelfrey and Humber are to fill the need for a front-end,
200-inning starter.
as opposed to an arm who might help
this year or next while we hope that Maine, Perez, and Humber develop
stuff and maybe we get the FA pitcher we really need.
I don't know how many pitchers better than Buehrle will be available.
Getting him would instantly shore up the rotation for this year, and
solidify it for the foreseeable future.
