That's not what I'm implying, what I'm suggesting is that any immigrant,
from any country, will be less prepared and knowledgeable on how things
work
in this country, and it stands to reason that a Latin ball player won't
pick
up on something that may be based in bigotry as readily as a black
American
player might. Bigotry, although existent, is not nearly as prevalent in
Latin American countries as it is here.
How do you rate Alex Rodriguez in this? He is a mulatto of
Dominican decent and grew up here in NYC.
I don't think he an issue, he was born and raised here.
What about
Manny Ramirez?
Manny was raised here as well, and I don't think he'd fall under the purview
of what Sheffield was attempting to assert.
I believe that you underestimate the ability of Latin American or
any immigrant athlete coming into American Sports.
I believe you don't have a clue as to what campo life is like, and what
baseball means to so many Latin Americans. I do, so I speak from my own
experience.
Lets say a 19 year old Gary Sheffield quits A-ball because his manager was
especially harsh on him, and he suspected it was because he was black. Is
his life really over? He'll go back home to Tampa, and he'll get a job
making 60K a year as a UPS driver or something.
If Sammy Sosa's A-ball manager calls him a wetback, and makes him carry
equipment, firstly Sammy probably won't even know what that means and likely
won't feel like he's being given extra work, and secondly even if he did,
what choice does he have? Complain and risk getting kicked out? Or quit
and go back to San Pedro de Macoris and tell his entire family (not 4 or 5
people mind you) that their dream is over because someone called him a
name?
As if they
were/are cut off from the media and news that comes out of our
country and how strong American/USA influence is in so many
countries.
Surely there's a strong influence, but that influence doesn't equate to a
real idea of the American experience on a personal level. And we're not
talking about 35 year olds, we're talking about young persons, many of which
are still in their teens and being recruited. If you think kids not much
older then these http://preview.tinyurl.com/3dc3e5 are privy to American
bigotry, or as ready to confront it as an American black is than so be it.
I honestly don't think Sheffield's point, as I see it, was that off-base, if
at all.
