God Bless America was indeed originally written during WWI. However, it
was not popular. It was re-worked and became popular in 1938 when Kate
Smith started to use it. As you may recall, the Philadelphia Flyers used
it instead of the National Anthem back in the 70's (or was it the 80's?).
