I expected Beltran to tank in his first year, just as so many others have
when adjusting to the spotlight and intensity of New York.
Using this same logic, I expected Matsui, with a year under his belt and a
better understanding of the territory, to blossom this year and approach the
type of performance that had earned him the reputation as the best
all-around player in Japan. Indeed, most of those who tanked during their
first year found a way to recapture significant portions of their game
thereafter; I really expected Kaz to do something around .350/.420 in 2005.
So, to me, Matsui is a bigger disappointment/loser than Beltran.
