I don't think the Mets ever had much use for Randa; he was something they
took back in order to unload Willie Blair. If I remember correctly, Randa
became arbitration-eligible, which led to him nearly tripling his salary the
season he went to KC. There was also no way he was going to start in front
of Ventura or Alfonzo.
Suppan, on the other hand, was a 23-yr-old pitcher with 10 big-league wins
to his credit when they decided they couldn't live without Jermaine
Allensworth. The next year, Suppan pitched 208 innings; that would have
placed him second in a Met rotation short on innings.
