As you know, on a championship team, the catcher has
to be able to handle the pitchers well and generally run
the ballclub on the field. (That's why some catchers
make good managers.) If Johjima cold do any of these
things his hitting would be a plus. It would be another
long shot.
Piazza was an average-minus catcher defensively, who
had Hall-of-Fame numbers that could carry a ball club.
So, some of his weaknesses could be overlooked, and
he has gotten better defensively as his power numbers
continue to decline.
