Offering Aceves just $900,000 is an insult. We'll end up with

He was the brightest light in an otherwise dim pitching staff

Yep!

======================================

I hardly think it's insulting.  Just the way the business works.
If
he must
I'm sure he'll get by on 900 grand for a year.  He'll get his turn
to cash
in if he proves to be worthy.  One good year (where he finally
remained
healthy) is not a career.  This is when team payrolls get balanced
out.  ALL
young players make less while they prove themselves.  If he proves
to be
good, he'll make up for it.  What?  Do you think he'll ask less if
they pay
him a bit more now?

I wouldn't want to be the one who tells a guy with 3 years
experience
and a 24 - 3 record that he "has to prove himself".- Hide quoted

Aceves is looking for $1.6M, which might be a little high, considering
his contract status.   Certainly, the mid-point...$1.25M seems both
fair and reasonable.- Hide quoted text -

Which is what will probably happen. He was good for us last year.

He was good....but now he is crucial.  Actually both players heading
toward arbitration seems to be keys to the success of the team.

============================================

So if he (or Papi for that matter) should get injured that's it for this
team eh?

If they couldn't survive the loss of either or both, then we might as well
find something else to occupy our summer.-

Absolutely.

The lineup is very top heavy now.

Ellsbury
Pedroia
Gonzalez
Youkilis
Ortiz

Then it gets very ordinary...

McDonald/Crawford
Sweeney/Ross
Saltalamacchia
Aviles/Punto

If Ortiz is not productive I could suggest....gardening....bird
watching...kayaking.

If Aceves flops then it's a 3 man and 2 pinata rotation.  Long walks
on the beach are nice.

=========================================

Boy oh boy.  Then imagine if one of those top four gets hurt.  I honestly
think part of the problem with last years group was they were all looking to
the superstars to carry them.  When it's a team effort required.  You might
remember that Ross guy was the NLCS MVP in 2010.  This is a guy who may
thrive on this team...in this park.  Other guys may well rise to the
occasion.  I think sometimes we lose sight of the fact that role players and
non-future-hall of famers can contribute mightily as well.  I remember the
Mark Bellhorns and Bill Muellers and Gabe Kaplers that helped bring that
first championship to this town.  Maybe because they felt a part of
something bigger than themselves.  You don't need all stars at every
position...just guys who do their damn jobs every day.- Hide quoted text -

Last year Crawford, Saltalamacchia, Aceves, Punto, Ross, Sweeney,
McDonald & Aviles
put up a combined line of .250/.303/.406/.709.

If that's the damn job they do....and any of the top 5 falter, it
won't be pretty

How many AB;s did Aceves have??- Hide quoted text -

Well look at ol' Lou. Lying quietly in the tall grass, and popping up
every now an then, to pick someone off.

Aceves did not have any AB...mea culpa....but it doesn't change the
numbers.
