a shock was what that team needed and OC and Alphabet provided it.
Neither one of them shocked anyone with their play that season. Varitek
and Millar, on the other hand, got them to the post-season.

I think there were many contributors...any one of whom was at least as indispensible. As for the SS...it was more a case of addition by subtraction. Nomar made himself into an underlying problem. He wouldn't (couldn't) "believe" in that team and was still enough of a leader that they would never have overcome his negative attitude. Sometimes intangibles are of the bad variety.
