Its hard to rank historical defense. I saw Mazeroski a lot...had the
incredible arm from 2nd to 1st on the D.P. But after seeing the stuff
Pedey does routinely I think Pedroia is probably better all around.
But "Who is best defensive 2b?" is probably like "Who threw the
highest velocity fast ball?" Fun to discuss but depends on definition,
and too much lost in the mists of time to ever say definitively.
Defense is the 'red-headed step-child' of statistics....(and of this
newsgroup, so don't expect a lot feedback)
In the last ten years Pedroia is one of top 5 second basemen in the
game. Chase Utley seems to be at the top of the list with a group of
Placido Polanco, Dustin Pedroia, Mark Ellis and Brandon Phillips close
behind him.
Without making adjustments for improved equipment, scouting and
fitness, I'd say the players of the last 40 years are superior to
those who played before them. If you try to make those adjustments
players like Mazeroski, Nellie Fox, Joe Gordon and Bobby Doerr need to
considered. Players who played between that era and the advent of
defensive numbers, Bobby Knoop, Frank White, Dick Green and Bobby
Grich als should be in the conversation.
Most of us never saw those older players. (There is one poster here
whose original screen name was 'Honus-Wagner Fan' that might be the
exception).
A lot assumptions here, but my top 5 list would be:
Mazeroski
White
Utley
Fox
Pick 'em
Could be Pedroia, but it could be a lot of other guys too
I'd like to see a side-by-side comparison of the gloves used by Doerr,
Maz, and Pedey.
Very interesting. It is true that that throw Maz could make to first
I recall looked like one of those once a century freak things, and
being able to do that on the DP probably got a lot of wins. For guys
as far back as Honus Wagner at SS....they of course had those tiny
gloves and commonly pebbles all over the infield so defensively the
only information there is word of mouth from contemporaries. Which is
not always so bad......Satch Paige used to say that "Bob Feller threw
faster than me"..but by Satch himself and Satch's contemporaries, his
control was unmatched. Fun to speculate on stuff like this.
